Texas A&M thesis format checklist

The formatting rules from Texas A&M University's official thesis and dissertation guide, condensed into a list you can tick off before your format review.

Margins

8.5 × 11 inch pages, minimum 1 inch margins; variations (e.g., wider binding margin) allowed up to 2 inches on any side, applied consistently.

Paragraphs consistently left-aligned or justified, not mixed.

Font and size

One font and 12 point throughout; accessible fonts encouraged (templates use Arial in Word, EB Garamond in LaTeX).

Table cells may go down to 7 point.

Line spacing

Text double-spaced; title page, TOC and lists have preset template formatting.

Captions/legends single-spaced; reference entries may be single-spaced with a blank line between.

Page numbers

Preliminary pages (abstract, dedication, acknowledgments, contributors and funding sources, nomenclature, TOC, lists) in lowercase Roman.

All following pages in Arabic numerals.

Front matter order

Sections as listed in the manual: Title page → Abstract → Dedication → Acknowledgments → Contributors and Funding Sources → Nomenclature → Table of contents → List of tables → List of figures

Which items are optional: see the manual's Document Content section and the templates.

Figures and tables

Refer to each in the text (e.g., 'see Table 1.1'); may sit in chapters or an appendix.

A List of Tables / List of Figures is required if any appear in the chapters; appendix items need not be listed.

References

A formal reference section is required: after the last chapter (REFERENCES as a main heading) or at the end of each chapter (article-based format).

Traditional format: one comprehensive list after the chapters.

Any discipline/journal style applied consistently; every listed source must be cited.

Submission

Upload the PDF to Vireo (recommended size 30 MB; large media as supplemental files).

Published in OAKTrust; dissertations and records of study also in ProQuest.

Also required by the deadline: Copyright and Availability Form and the fully signed Written Thesis/Dissertation Approval Form in ARCS.

Deadlines

Deadline is 'last day (by 5:00 p.m.) for submission' of the PDF in Vireo plus the signed approval form, posted on the Grad School's Dates and Deadlines page.
